Mandalas are not just a one-time assignment. They are “ways of seeing.” Mandalas involve perception, our means of communication, our questioning…and —our resiliency. Mandalas enable you to think about “big” concepts, such as what is this ongoing experiment called America? Who are Americans? By studying the concepts of history, each student begins to form an idea of what America means. Representing America symbolically gives shape and substance to concepts that are difficult to explain in words. Through this creation, however, the formation of meaning in words will occur. Creating a mandala is a great way to combine your studies in two subjects: English and History. For this reason, AMC History and English are creating mandalas of America in a shared assignment.
